Hoyer Beats Murtha
Steny Hoyer becomes the new Democratic Majority Leader. Democratic back-benchers were smarter than soon-to-be Speaker Nancy Pelosi by not putting an ethically-challenged man into the media’s cross hairs.
It’s better for the country that Hoyer won. First, Hoyer isn’t the darling of the anti-war Left. According to the San Francisco Chronicle “Hoyer has been less critical of the Iraq war than Murtha.” Those who want U.S. troops out of Iraq without regard to national security or Middle East stability shouldn’t be empowered. Second, if Murtha won Abscam would have made a reappearance. Not a way to be an alternative to the “Culture of Corruption” Democrats campaigned against.
For Pelosi, in her first real political challenge she loses. The media, fellow Democrats, and Republicans already see a chink in the armor.
