How Serious are Democrats in Fighting Terrorists?

by Sean Hackbarth

The Democrats simply want to “get us out of Iraq,” to use Arianna Huffington’s words. I fear they’re not simply cocooning and ignoring outside forces intent on doing damage to the United States but trying to turn the clock back to Sep. 10, 2001.

Speaker-elect Pelosi and the gang talk about bipartisanship. Only it’s just talk when it comes to monitoring terrorists’ conversations. A bill to authorize NSA spying of possible terrorists inside the country is dying on the vine in the lame duck session of Congress. The White House wants it passed, but not even Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will touch it. (Make that another black mark on the Presidential wannabe.) You hear not a peep from Pelosi and Reid. Pelosi is too busy trying to reign in powerful incoming committee speakers like Reps. Charlie Rangel and John Conyers so she can get some early legislative victories after her failure to make Rep. John Murtha Majority Leader. I’d like Rep. Ed Markey to push the legislation ahead. Earlier this year he said, “If the administration wants to fight terrorism legally, then it should ask for the authority it needs and then follow the law that Congress passes.”

I dread that future day when the U.S. is again attacked by Islamist terrorists. There will be plenty of finger-pointing and charges of government agencies failing to “connect the dots.” We’ll find out the terrorists were making calls to contacts overseas, but were unable to listen in because Congress refused to let the NSA do its job. It will be a sad, sad day, but one that could be prevented.

“Bye-Bye to Secret Spy Program?”
