Democrats Knew About Foley E-Mails Before They Said They Didn’t

by Sean Hackbarth

We have more evidence that Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi’s and Rep. Rahm Emmanuel’s “Culture of Corruption” campaign was smoke and mirrors. It was a gimmick used only to further enrage an angry electorate. Glen Greenwald found in the House Ethics Report [PDF] on the Mark Foley scandal that “The communications directors for both the House Democratic Caucus and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee also had copies of the e-mails in the fall of 2005″ (p. 76). Greenwald points out Emmanuel did his best Clintonian spin by denying he ever saw Foley’s inappropriate e-mails; e-mails the investigating subcommittee said were “inappropriate communications” (p. 74).

The report damns both parties saying, “There is some evidence that political considerations played a role in decisions that were made by persons in both parties” (p. 71). With an impending election at the time no one should be shocked. Still we should be very disappointed with how our leaders put political considerations above the well-being of House pages entrusted to their care.

Under the command of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who hasn’t formally been giving control of the House we’ve had:

  • Abscam-challenged Rep. John Murtha endorsed by Pelosi for Majority Leader.
  • Impeached judge Rep. Alcee Hastings almost chairing the House Intelligence Committee.
  • Rep. Alan Mollohan, under investigation by the FBI could take control of the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Science, State, Justice, Commerce and Related Agencies which deals with *surprise* the FBI.
  • Rep. William Jefferson re-elected in Louisiana.

New slogan: “Democrats lied, Promises Slide.”

” Did Rahm Emanuel Lie about his Knowledge of Mark Foley? Yes.”

“The Culture Of Corruption Redux”

UPDATE: Wizbang’s Jay Tea asks,

Will Mr. Jefferson be welcomed back with open arms, his seniority and committee seats restored? Or will he be treated as a pariah, an outcast, a stain on the party that campaigned so vigorously against corruption? He has been publicly championed by the Congressional Black Caucus, the same group that fought so futilely to get impeached former federal judge Alcee Hastings named chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence. (Apparently to the CBC, race trumps character in pretty much every case.)

Brian at Iowa Voice writes,

So what does it say (again) about Democrats when they re-elect a notoriously corrupt Congressman, one who was found to have $90,000 in his freezer? One who misused the National Guard during Katrina to retrieve his personal belongings? What does that say about the people who vote for guys like this?

I’ll tell you what it says: it says they don’t care if the man is corrupt, they’ve come to expect it from their Democratic candidates. Jefferson is simply the latest to be caught in deals like this, but he’s certainly not the first Democrat to do it, and he sure as heck won’t be the last.

UPDATE: Allahpundit informs us, “Well and good, but let’s not kid ourselves — Greenwald isn’t exactly typing through tears here, Emanuel having been on the nutroots hit list for awhile now thanks to his moderate leanings.”

Foley Wrap Up…

A good while back Michael and I spent a bit of time pointing out that the Foley scandal was bi-partisan in nature and that its implications spread far beyond the impulses of one congressman. None of that means the scandal was very important other than …

2

Democrats didn’t reelect Dollar Bill Jefferson; the people of Louisiana did. At any rate, there’s a movement afoot to deny him his seat, or at least refuse to seat him while he’s under indictment.

Also - Hastings was impeached as a result of false testimony. That’s a matter of historical record.

3

Also, Murtha? Cleared by the House Ethics Committee. In what sense is he “Abscam-challenged”?

4

Murtha wasn’t cleared because it was 6-6 tie in the House Ethics Committee. Have fun reading and watching.

5

Wait, Chet, got a link to any info about that movement to deny Jefferson his seat? That’s fairly encouraging and i’d like to read up on it.

“Wait, Chet, got a link to any info about that movement to deny Jefferson his seat?”

Josh Micah Marshall writes about it at www.talkingpointsmemo.com.

“Murtha wasn’t cleared because it was 6-6 tie in the House Ethics Committee.”

That means “cleared.” The Wikipedia article is not ambiguous. He’s on videotape saying “I’m not interested” to a $50,000 bribe. (Of course, if you’re a Republican, it’s somewhat ambiguous whether or not simply cutting a $50,000 check to a Congressman is bribery in the first place; many of you would have us believe that’s nothing more than a harmless congratulations.)

Honestly, none of this is anything compared to the dealings of Abramoff-gate. And let’s not forget ol’ Duke-stir, doing a ten-spot for bribery. I know you guys like to forget the little letter “r” that used to go with his name.

7

Then ignore this:

“But Don Bailey would. At the time he was another Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania serving on the Ethics Committee and considered himself a friend of Murtha. He told TAS that he “successfully made the arguments that saved Murtha from admonishment.” Though he now regrets defending Murtha, Bailey thought the FBI overreached in investigating members of Congress.

Asked about the Committee’s deliberations and the McLaughlin/Murtha exchange, Bailey disagreed that Murtha was “exonerated.” “What the Ethics Committee did not do was summon enough votes to punish him,” he said.”

It’s 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, Sean. Unless you believe that “innocent until proven guilty” doesn’t apply to Democrats?

You’re drawing a distinction that doesn’t really exist.

9

How can you ay race played an issue when the man ran against a black woman? It’s sad that Jefferson won, but citing race playing a role makes no sense.

The Democrat Voters of Lousiana did to put it more specific.

Also note that the Democrat party could rescind William Jefferson’s Democratic Standing in the party at any time.

They have not chosen to do so despite the obvious corruption an unethical behavior.

“How can you ay race played an issue when the man ran against a black woman? It’s sad that Jefferson won, but citing race playing a role makes no sense. ”

Actually he ran against a White Man in the primaries I believe. But perhaps against a Black Woman in the General Election.

The vote in favor of William Jefferson is a race issue (for sure) because New Orleans African Americans have the same mentality as one’s in Detroit Michigan. That mentality being that of “Kingship status” given to elected officials because they think the “Whities” are trying to make their politicians look bad.

And I don’t say this off the top of my head, this is as a witness to an African American talking about Kwamie Kilpatrick.

The African American voting mentality is to re-elect the Black Man in order to spite the White Man.

12

We’re talking about a man who has not even been indicted for any crime. Let’s just keep that in mind. When there’s a legitimate ruling on the corruption, the Democratic leadership will take action. Let’s not railroad this guy like they did to Hastings.

13

Chet,

We are talking about a Man with Ethics problems on top of having $90,000 cash stuffed in his freezer.

The Ethics problems in question are when he took a selfish trip to New Orleans to protect his own stuff while not giving a dang about anyone else.

Let’s not forget that his ethics problems ALONE should put him in same line with Al Ce Hastings, regardless if somehow stuffing $90,000 in your Freezer has some logical, legal, reason.

Chet wrote,

“When there’s a legitimate ruling on the corruption, the Democratic leadership will take action. ”

And you know that is pure garbage.

Tom Delay has yet to be convicted of anything at all and he resigned from Congress in face of tremendous calls for him to be thrown out of Congress by the Democrats.

The Democrats give the Republicans a different set of rules to live by.

The Democrats can get away with murder.

The Republican can’t get away with accidentally dropping a pencil on the floor.
