Romney Officially Announced Presidential Run
In Michigan today, Mitt Romney formally announced he’s running for President.
In his speech Romney talked about faith which got Greg Mueller, former communication man for Pat Buchanan and Steve Forbes to say:
The conservative movement is splintered right now,” said Greg Mueller, who ran the presidential campaigns of Pat Buchanan and Steve Forbes. “Governor Romney is working hard to show his stripes as a Reagan conservative. This will help him as long as he isn’t just paying lip service to conservative issues.”
“But the Christian right is still looking,” Mueller added. “They are not sold or uniting behind anyone yet.”
Part of the hesitation is Romney’s Mormonism. Another part is his changing of political positions, particularly abortion. The Politico’s Roger Simon noted Romney became pro-life two years ago, about the time he began his quest for the GOP Presidential nomination.
Romney has an amazing track record leading large organizations. He built Bain Capital into a financial power, saved the Salt Lake Olympics, and competently ran Massachusetts. The question is how mallable are his politics. He sounds like a good conservative candidate, but that’s from morphing from a moderate Senate candidate in 1994. Other than continuing to speak on conservative issues and win by repetition I don’t know what Romney can do to ease my wariness.
“Is Romney Too Good To Be True?”
