AP Writes Meaningless Romney Polygamy Story

by Sean Hackbarth

The Associated Press with their inability to write factually on Iraqi violence felt the need to point out that Mitt Romney’s family has a polygamist past. That’s not surprising since he does come from a line of Mormons:

While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate’s great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.

Real people. Real success stories. Yahoo! Personals. See Stephanie and Mike’s story.

Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president.

Romney’s great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.

Romney’s great-grandmother, Hannah Hood Hill, was the daughter of polygamists. She wrote vividly in her autobiography about how she “used to walk the floor and shed tears of sorrow” over her own husband’s multiple marriages.

Romney’s great-great grandfather, Parley Pratt, an apostle in the church, had 12 wives. In an 1852 sermon, Parley Pratt’s brother and fellow apostle, Orson Pratt, became the first church official to publicly proclaim and defend polygamy as a direct revelation from God.

There’s no mention or even a hint of Mitt engaging in polygamy. The AP even notes Romney is the only candidate among the GOP big three who has been married once.

If prominent evangelical Christians put out this story I’d expect the AP to publish a story about their anti-Mormon behavior. This story is a cheap shot, a smear. It adds nothing to readers trying to learn about Romney. It does say the AP is quite pathetic to launch such a miserable, meaningless attack. To steal from Iowa Voice, “Does this mean we can start going through Hillary’s family tree? Or Edwards? Or Obama?” There’s also Kevin Hayden: “Did Kennedy get pinned with the Catholic Church’s bloody Crusades? Obviously not. If Mormonism in Romney’s adult life has any black marks against it, it’s fair to look for evidence of Romney’s support of that.”

I’m sure Romney will survive, somehow. After all the media has turned a completely blind eye to his opportunistic flip-flopping. Romney makes Kerry look like constancy’s very soul.

AP’s version of what is going on in Iraq holds together a lot beter than Michelle Jamil-Hussein-does-not-exist Malkin’s.

Hello Sean:

I appreciate what you are saying in your essay above.

If you want to find another meaningless story to write about, you might want to spend more time at Huffington Post.

There, you can read a fake headline, and unknowingly rant about a non-existent story, as many rants there are just based on the fake headline.

Or, if you are so inclined as to attempt to find the headline’s article, click and be deceived, and then rant about the lack of a story for the fake headline.

I wrote about my experience there and my little essay was published in two independent media outlets - of opposing political views.

Since you previously wrote about HuffPost’s decision to make an entry in original reporting, I thought you might appreciate what I wrote about them with respect to the aforementioned situation:

How to Lose Credibility on your blog, the Huffington Post way

The above is linked to the essay on my new blog, but here is that same essay, accepted by two independent news outlets — one from the right and one from the left:

FreeRepublic.com (independent conservatives)

BlackListed News.com (independent liberals)

Thanks for letting me share this with you and your readers. I hope it is on topic to your larger points, and I think it is.

If, as some are predicting, Al Gore runs again, I expect to see an article from the AP about his father’s ative defense of segregation…

Yeah, I saw this a few days ago and I reacted much the same way you did. Why does it matter that a great great grandfather of his was a polygamist? He isn’t. His father wasn’t. It’s like trying to tar and feather Al Capone’s great grandson simply because he has the familiy genes. Ridiculous in either case.

It was a dirty move by the AP with all sorts of obvious political intentions. Unbiased media my ass.
