Fred Thompson Really is Considering Presidential Run

by Sean Hackbarth

Fred Thompson told Fox News Sunday that he’s considering running for President:

WALLACE: Question: Are you considering running for president in 2008?

THOMPSON: I’m giving some thought to it. Going to leave the door open.

WALLACE: Well, you say leaving the door open. What’s going to go into your decision-making process, what factors? Why would you do it? And what do you see — do you see some holes in the current Republican field?

THOMPSON: It’s not really a reflection on the current field at all. As you know, some of them are very good friends of mine. I’m going to wait and see how it pans out, see how they do, how it develops.

A lot of people think it’s late already. I don’t really think it is, although the rules of the game have changed somewhat.

Part of it is internal, a little self-examination on my part. Adlai Stevenson, I guess it was, said, you know, the trick is to do what’s necessary to be president and become president and still deserve to be president. And that’s serious consideration.

I’m concerned about what’s going on in the country, in our world, always have been. Just the fact that I left the Senate did not negate that in any way. I’ve been involved in national security issues and things of that nature since I’ve been out of the Senate.

I think we’re going into one of the most perilous times that our country has been in. I think that there are great opportunities out there.

But it’s not preordained that we’re going to remain the strongest and freest nation in the history of the world. We’ve got to do some things well. We’ve got to do some things differently.

What’s good about Thompson is he’s pro-life, pro-gun, pro-surge, and interestingly wants Scooter Libby to get a pardon. On the downside he voted for McCain-Feingold.

Thompson didn’t state when he would make a decision.

UPDATE: There’s plenty of discussion a Redstate with a few wondering about Thompson’s charisma. Hello? The guy has a commanding presence in television and movies. Most will recognize him as soon as they see him. He radiates gravitas and seriousness–at least his characters do. Policies and dealing with the media magnifying lens become the biggest questions for Thompson.

Little Miss Attila is so excited she’ll temporarily forgo food. What will she do if Thompson decides to run?

So are you saying you wouldn’t vote for him because of McCain-Feingold? Would that turn you to Giuliani or Romney based on that sole reason?

Because he knows better than the criminal justice system, including a jury of 11 that deliberated for days?

Isn’t this the kind of bullshit you usually call actors out on? Or is it just OKIYAR?

Guns vs. political speech: a tough call. However, Thompson has even more charisma than Guiliani, and is more of a “true conservative”–whatever the heck that means.

Chet: Are you really taking the stance that no jury has ever reached an incorrect verdict? If so, it’s rather an extraordinary position. Possibly unique.

4

An incorrect verdict isn’t even the issue here. A pardon, by definition, is an act of saying “we know you are guilty, but we forgive you anyway.”

5

No, but what you do in that case is call a mistrial and send it back to a jury. Is there some reason why that’s an inappropriate step in this case? The only reason anyone’s talking about a pardon is because this guy is a friend of the President. How is that justice?

6

So Libby is deserving of less justice simply because he worked in the White House? Now that doesn’t make any sense.

I assume Libby lied, got caught, and was properly judged. Still, when it ends up being a insignificant crime in the big scheme of things a pardon is the most just course of action. Ask some of the Libby jurors.

I don’t understand. Is it your contention that pardons are regularly handed out to people who lie to grand juries?

How is not getting special treatment “less justice”? I really wonder if conservatives even understand the meaning of the word “equal.” How is it fair that Libby is looking at a pardon when pardons were never even considered for other people who have committed the same crime?

8

First, we don’t know if Libby is “looking” for a pardon. They have motions and appeals coming.

Second, Libby is just as deserving for a pardon as anyone one else who has been convicted for a crime that in the big scheme of things is meaningless.

Fred Thompson in the running is a Good Thing.

I’m not familiar with the “grand scheme of things” defense. I guess I’ll try that the next time I get a speeding ticket.

Keep in mind, though, that the Plame leak almost certainly got at least 3 people killed. How does that fit into your “grand scheme of things”?
