Senate Republicans Stop Cut-and-Run Democrats
Senate Republicans have built the most effective barrier against the Democrat’s cut-and-run abandonment of Iraq. Today, the Sen. Mitch McConnell-let Republicans earned a significant victory:
In the Senate, after weeks of skirmishing, Republicans easily turned back Democratic legislation requiring a troop withdrawal to begin within 120 days. The measure set no fixed deadline for completion of the redeployment, but set a goal of March 31, 2008. The vote was 50-48 against the measure, 12 short of the 60 needed for passage.
Netroots kingpin Matt Stoller saw an anti-war victory in Majority Leader Harry Reid’s defeat. Only three Democrats voted against the motion. “That means that we had three only defections – over 95% of the Democratic Senate caucus voted for a timeline, which is a far cry from the 22 who voted against the war in 2002,” he wrote. He must be too busy with his House Democrats enemies list to realize the Senate rejected a hard timetable.
What should be disconcerting for Stoller and the netroots is the Gregg Amendment which says, “no funds should be cut off or reduced for American troops in the field” passed 82-16, and the Murry Amendment providing adequate funding for troops training and health care passed 96-2. The Senate rejected defunding the Iraq War.
The House is a cut-and-runner’s and lobbyist’s dream. Highlights of the 2007 Emergency Supplemental include $120,000,000 for shrimp research, $283,000,000 in dairy farm subsidies, and a boost in the minimum wage. That will surely put fear in the hearts of our Islamist enemy.
The Kossites have turned the vote into another opportunity to beat the snot out of Sen. Joe Lieberman. That’s got to get boring after a while.
For some insight Rick Moran delves into the possibility the surge working, and what that means for Congressional Democrats. Redstate lets the right wing pity Sen. Reid.
