Thompson Should Have Emulated Reagan
When Fred Thompson began filling in for Paul Harvey (last year?) he was boring and indistinguishable other than his bold voice. This next round, conveniently aligned with talk of a possible Presidential bid, he’s sounding better. He finally got his groove. This commentary on Mexican illegal immigration is plain-spoken, to the point, and possibly self-written. Thompson missed a great opportunity if he’s been thinking about running for President. He should have started doing radio commentaries years ago. That’s what Ronald Reagan did in his interregnum between California governor and President. Those radio commentaries allowed him to communicate with the public while letting him develop his own conservative ideas. David Brooks wrote about the commentaries in 2001:
Reagan was a middlebrow (and I mean that as a compliment). He believed in the serious explication of ideas. He’d troll through clippings from The Public Interest or National Review, or a policy document someone had sent him, and he’d want to bring it to his listeners’ attention.
Thompson could have done the same, putting himself in a much stronger position for a Presidential run.
