Edwards to Continue Campaign Despite Wife’s Health

by Sean Hackbarth

The big news with John Edwards isn’t that he’s dropping out because of his wife’s cancer; he’s running despite Elizabeth Edwards’ health:

The recurrence of the cancer — this time on Elizabeth Edwards’ bone — presents a setback for the couple, both personally and politically. But both said the cancer was treatable and that they would stick with their plans to campaign vigorously for the nomination.

“From our perspective, there was no reason to stop,” Edwards said. “I don’t think we seriously thought about it.”

Edwards made the announcement to get ahead of this heartbreaking story.

The Associated Press calls Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer “incurable” which brings a new wrinkle to the Edwards campaign. Suppose Edwards won the Presidency only to wind up in the situation of trying to manage his administration while his wife is near death. A similar situation confronts Sen. John McCain. He faces an electorate that is more willing to vote for a Mormon than a 72-year-old man. Health and mental wellbeing play a role in both situations. It may not be up front in voters’ minds I’m sure it will be a part of their thinking process.
