Tancredo Raises $1 Million

by Sean Hackbarth

When Rep. Tom Tancredo decided to run for President I wrote him off as a protest candidate with one message: anti-immigration. With news that his Presidential exploratory committee has raised over $1 million it means Tancredo probably will formally run for President. What impresses me is Tancredo raised his cash pretty much under the radar without much media attention. The anti-immigration wing of the GOP want a loud, forceful candidate. When the first set of campaign financials come out don’t be surprised if Tancredo is leading the money primary for second-tier candidates.

$1 million is just enough to cause a lot of trouble.

[...] Then there’s the announced dark-horses, including Tom Tancredo, Duncan Hunter and (just because I’m in Wisconsin) Tommy Thompson. Tancredo is a one-note pony who thinks that hitting $1 million is a big deal (H/T – Sean Hackbarth). Hunter, who has a few more ideas, has the same limitation as Tancredo (being a “mere” Congressman) and less cash. Tommy is the Midwest version of Romney with a “charm” that doesn’t work on the far sides of the mountain ranges. The fact that I can’t recall the other dark-horses off the top of my head tells you their chances (namely, none). [...]

Most people think Tancredo is a crank. Getting that much money without the attention means immigration still has plenty of legs. There’s a lot of angry people willing to give. I wonder what will happen when he formally announces.

Just like when I first heard about Barack Obama
and all the buzz, my reaction was to check him out
and see what is there. When one million is donated
to this guy, don’t you think we should check out his message? I read his speech about Miami and it was very insightful. Tancredo is not talking about
regular immigration, he is talking about uncontrolled illegal immigration in an age of generous government benefits and multi-culturalism.
I have not seen anyone else say it so clearly.
Most people do not think he is a crank. Most people just do not know who he is yet.

Tancredo only wants 250,000 people immigrating into the U.S. each year. That’s abhorent to the idea of America being a beacon of liberty to the world as well as potentially damaging to the economy.

Illegal immigration needs to be curtailed simply because our nation must respect the rule of law. But we get many benefits from immigrants. Ideally I’d want a clampdown on illegal immigration with an increase in legal immigration. Tancredo and his fans would call me “nuts.”

Actually, I had a lot of respect for Tancredo until his ridiculous Miami bashing. Miami is a world class city, one of America’s finest. To call it “third world” means he has no idea what he’s talking about.
