MSNBC Axes Imus

by Sean Hackbarth

No longer will you be able to enjoy your morning coffee while watching Don Imus on MSNBC:

MSNBC said Wednesday it will drop its simulcast of the “Imus in the Morning'’ radio program, responding to growing outrage about the radio host’s racial slur against the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

“This decision comes as a result of an ongoing review process, which initially included the announcement of a suspension. It also takes into account many conversations with our own employees,'’ NBC news said in a statement.

The announcement also was made on air.

Talk-show host Don Imus triggered the uproar on his April 4 show, when he referred to the mostly black Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.'’ His comments have been widely denounced by civil rights and women’s groups.

Let’s be serious. how many people watched Imus in the Morning? How many watch MSNBC period? Now, they actually have to put something news-like on. It’s MSNBC expect it to be bad or worse Countdown re-runs.

Sponsors are dropping left and right so I’m sure that’s why the cable network dumped Imus. It looks like CBS Radio will follow suit. They’re trying to hold out as long as they can hoping the firestorm dies down, but Bruce Gordon a CBS board director and ex-head of the NAACP is pushing hard for Imus’ firing. I expect the I-man to get fired. After a few months of silence we’ll hear him again on radio, satellite radio that is.

Gawker took the pulse of the people. They were slightly more funny than Don Imus.

It’s certainly true that advertising was at play. I’m inclined to wonder how you can possibly be “sure that’s why the cable network dumped Imus.” There were certainly some other compelling reasons to have him pack his bags. How can you be actually sure? I am sure you meant to say you “suspect”.

They could always rerun The Olbertard in the morning … so no one can watch him in another time slot.

[…] You heard it here first. […]

You know he’s got the fastest-growing audience in that time slot, while Bill-O is hemorrhaging viewers. And nobody even bothered to flip on the Glenn Dreck show in the first place.

The reports of Olbermann’s demise are greatly exaggerated.
