Pat Tillman Lies: Dark Spot on Rumsfeld’s Fine Service

by Sean Hackbarth

For all of Donald Rumsfeld’s accomplishments as Defense Secretary there are nagging issues that could have been addressed been resolved long ago. Fixing the Pat Tillman mess is one. The Pentagon got some nice PR when Tillman gave up millions in an NFL career to join the army and fight our Islamist enemies. Initially when he was killed in Afghanistan the Defense Department said he died charging the enemy. For weeks Tillman’s family believed that story. In fact, Tillman died from friendly fire. Ever since the question has been who instigated the false story? Investigations have taken place and Rep. Henry Waxman held a hearing yet we’re no closer to the answer.

In the larger scope of the Islamist War the Tillman deception isn’t that big a deal–unless your Tillman’s distraught family. More pressing is improving intelligence so our leaders don’t claim a despot posesses WMDs only to not find them after an invasion. Also important is better understanding the societies of potential foes so our troops invade with the resources and manpower needed to succeed.

Still, the pursuit of the truth is a good in and of itself. We deserve to know who engaged in the Tillman cover up and hold them accountable.

You still think that was an intelligence failure? LOL!

No doubt. The mental gymnastics that need to be performed to keep telling yourself that this Administration had the best of intentions with this war…it’s incredible.

Even if it was just an intelligence failure…even if Gonzales is simply incompetent and not playing politics with his job…even if Abu Grahib was just a “few bad apples”…even if there were only a few people involved in the Tillman/Lynch Propaganda SNAFU…how this doesn’t all add up to “this Administration is completely incompetent” in your mind, Sean, is staggering.

Unless, i suppose, the explanation is, “ok, sure, they’re bumbling fools, but we have to go to war with the Islamists with the fools we have, not the fools we wish we had.”
