Anna Nicole Smith Diaries Sold for 60K

Gee, I lost out on this addition to my collection of pointless items:
An unnamed recording company executive from Dallas has paid $59,750 for two diaries written by Anna Nicole Smith in the early 1990s.
The purchase came after the diaries failed to sell at a recent auction, said Doug Norwine, director of music and entertainment memorabilia […]

Survivor producer Mark Burnett along with MySpace want to create an American Idol for politics:
The online social networking site MySpace and reality TV producer Mark Burnett are teaming to launch the search for an independent presidential candidate.
The political reality show “Independent” comes with a $1 million cash prize and a catch: the winner can’t keep […]

Pat Tillman Lies: Dark Spot on Rumsfeld’s Fine Service

For all of Donald Rumsfeld’s accomplishments as Defense Secretary there are nagging issues that could have been addressed been resolved long ago. Fixing the Pat Tillman mess is one. The Pentagon got some nice PR when Tillman gave up millions in an NFL career to join the army and fight our Islamist enemies. Initially when […]

McCain Will Tackle Age Question

Sen. John McCain will formally announce he’s running for President (like we didn’t know that already). In an excerpt of his speech sent to me by his online guru Patrick Hynes along with the usual conservative bromides about fiscal discipline and winning the Iraq War McCain engages on the age question. He will say,
I’m not […]

Castro Getting Better, Cuba Weeps

This is one time I hope U.S. intelligence gets it wrong:
U.S. intelligence agencies, which appeared to be on a death watch for Cuban leader Fidel Castro a few months ago, now believe his health is rebounding and cannot rule out a full return to power, officials said on Tuesday.
May Day celebrations in Havana next week […]

Not Even a Desire to Win

Someone needs to ask Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid if they want the U.S. to win the Iraq War. They shouldn’t answer if we can win, but would they prefer an American victory to a defeat. Either Democratic leader would stumble and stammer and select the precise set of words to […]

PoliBlog Reaches 1,000,000 Milestone

One of my favorite weblogs, Steve Taylor’s PoliBlog, reached 1,000,000 today. He puts intellectual integrity and principles above partisan politics. You’ll understand by following his commentary on Alberto Gonzales and the fired U.S. Attorneys. I always check out his weblog for a substantive look at the politics of the day. Oh, and he’s a pretty […]

Democrats Consider No Confidence Vote on Gonzales

Senate Democrats are considering a no confidence vote on Alberto Gonzales:
“I don’t think [Gonzales] can survive, no matter what the president says,” said the source. The vote would be nonbinding and have no substantive impact, but it would force all Republican Senators into the politically uncomfortable position of saying publicly whether they continue to support […]

Republican Candidates Don’t Fear MSNBC

Republicans have agreed to hold their first Presidential debate on MSNBC in California:
The Republican debate is being held in the Reagan Library, important to Republicans for its obvious symbolism, and the candidates were personally invited to participate by Nancy Reagan. Confirmed Republicans include Sam Brownback, Jim Gilmore, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, […]

Coming Together Over Pasta

Time for a feel-good story. This one is out of Waukesha by way of inner city Milwaukee. The Waukesha West Academic Decathalon team won the state title. That was great news except for the urgent need to raise $10,000 for the trip to Hawaii while studying six different subjects and preparing for essay, interview, speech, […]

David’s and Crow’s Semi Mea Culpa

Laurie David and Sheryl Crow want to “engage directly with the Bush administration in a constructive conversation about solutions to the global warming crisis.” I doubt their sincerity after their encounter with Karl Rove. They had their confrontation at the White House Correspondents Dinner and what did David do first? Write up a post publicizing […]

Nicholas Winset Speaks on Being Fired

Nicholas Winset, the adjunct professor fired by Emmanuel College, speaks about being fired for talking about gun control and Virgina Tech in the classroom.

If you think the media isn’t hearing you bypass them. That’s the new age we’re in.
Steven Taylor has some additional thoughts.

Gonzales’ Waiting Game Will Pan Out

Alberto Gonzales continues to demonstrate his ineptitude. He won’t resign as Attorney General despite the embarrassment and demonstrated incompetence. He’s played the waiting game and since no laws have been broken President Bush doesn’t feel a need to fire him. This is a black mark on President Bush. His stubbornness and personal loyalty have clouded […]

The Environment’s Best Friend: Economic Growth

Did you know the air was getting cleaner before the first Earth Day in 1970? Indur Goklany writes,
Between 1957 and 1970, particulate matter concentrations in urban areas declined 15 percent, while sulfur dioxide concentrations peaked in 1963, declining 40 percent between 1962 and 1969.
Environmental diseases like malaria and typhoid decreased.
How could it be […]
