MSM Bash Bush for Gaffe that Wasn’t

by Sean Hackbarth

Yes, President Bush is the worst-speaking President in my lifetime. Living through Reagan and Clinton spoiled me. But the guy gets a raw deal from the MSM for slips from his tongue. On its front page the Washington Post declared Bush committed a “royal faux pas” by almost getting the year wrong of when Queen Elizabeth visited the U.S. for the bicentennial:

Expressing admiration for her long friendship with the United States, Bush noted that Elizabeth had dined with 10 presidents and had “helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17 . . .” He quickly caught and corrected his mistake, “in 1976.”

Her Majesty did not appear to be amused.

Laughter rippled across the South Lawn, but the queen, who celebrated her 81st birthday last month, shot Bush a look that he sheepishly acknowledged “only a mother could give a child.”

The man corrected himself in mid-sentence. Give Bush a little credit. He didn’t make up a word.

How about accusing the queen of being too sensitive? For just ignore it for the meaningless “story” that it is? No, can’t do that. It would deviate from the “Bush is an idiot” frame the MSM enjoys reinforcing.

Allahpundit has video.

But the real question remains:

Is our presidents learning?

But he didn’t just almost misspeak – everyone does that. He went on to do his “heh Heh” and to wink at the Queen; implication being that they both know that this is just a silly ceremony, and that they’re above it.
But she actually believes in serving her country.
For fifty years she has been visiting tribal cheiftans, tyrants and morons – the woman is not too sensitive.
He’s an arrogant jerk, and if this character flaw only got us mocked around the world, I wouldn’t care.

Someone’s reading too much into it. Kind of like the MSM.

Just watched an interview with Mrs. Bush about her dinner last nite at the British Embassy.
Seems the Queen also made a joke (well…as far as Queen jokes go) about it when she spoke to everyone at the dinner.
Dont look to the MSM to acknowledge it, of course.

[...] When President Bush almost got the year of the U.S. bicentennial wrong it garnered front-page treatment by the Washington Post. Somehow he insulted Queen Elizabeth and embarrassed the nation when he corrected himself mid-word. Here we have a Presidential candidate with as much executive experience as me who made a huge numerical error yet there’s nothing about the shame he brought to his Illinois constituents or his supporters or questions about his intelligence.
