Dobson Doesn’t Dig Rudy in Drag
One reason James Dobson doesn’t think Rudy Giuliani is Presidential material is he has dressed in drag:
Shouldn’t the American people be able to expect a certain decorum and dignity from the man who occupies the White House? On this measure, as well, Giuliani fails miserably. Much has been written in the blogosphere about his three public appearances in drag. In each instance, he tried to be funny by dressing like a woman. Can you imagine Ronald Reagan, who loved a good joke, doing something so ignoble in pursuit of a cheap guffaw? Not on your life.
I assume other people have fallen in Dobson’s eyes.

Some Like It Hot must never be shown in the Dobson household.
Let’s not forget Willard Scott as Carmen Miranda. The Today Show must have been off limits for James after that.
These examples of men doing “something so ignoble in pursuit of a cheap guffaw” wouldn’t be considered wild cultural Leftist by any measure. It shows Dobson needs to get a grip.
It’s one thing to not like a candidate; it’s another to publicly declare him unacceptable. Allah writes,
What he’s saying here, in no uncertain terms, is that he’s fully prepared to hand the war to Hillary Clinton to avoid having to vote for a guy who’s promised to appoint justices in the mold of John Roberts and Sam Alito to deal with abortion. He categorically refuses, in other words, to make the same basic compromise libertarian conservatives are asked to make routinely on behalf of the war effort — to throw in with people with whom we disagree on social issues to ensure robust prosecution of the war on terror.
If Giuliani ended up winning the Presidency he would be under plenty of pressure to fulfill his pledge to appoint strict constructionists to the Supreme Court. If he nominated someone like Sandra Day O’Connor or David Souter there’s a good chance Senate Republicans would revolt. Also, Republican success in the mid-term elections of 2010 would be greatly reduced, plus there’d be a good chance someone would challenge Rudy in the Republican primaries of 2012. The issue of appointing good Supreme Court nominees is as important to Republicans as pushing tax cuts and a strong national defense. Republicans go against this core issue at their own peril. That Dobson doesn’t understand this shows he cares more about stroking his ego, puffing up his perceived self-importance than finding politically-astute ways to push his agenda. Putting it bluntly, when it comes to politics Dobson isn’t that smart.
Since Rudy is pro-abortion we could assume Dobson wouldn’t vote for him. That doesn’t mean he has to declare it. The more politically savvy thing to say would be, “It’s early in the campaign so I don’t have to make up my mind. I can watch along with the rest of the country.” If ever asked directly about supporting Giuliani Dobson could spin and say he didn’t want to say anything negative about any of the candidates.
“James Dobson: “I Cannot, and Will Not, Vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008″”

That you even bother to blog on Dobson’s opinion of The Man Who Would Be Queen is proof of what an influential figure Dobson has become in the minds of Republican theocrats.
Putting it bluntly, when it comes to politics Dobson isn’t that smart.
He doesn’t have to be. He has so much influence that he can dictate Republican primaries and Supreme Court Justice nominations (Harriet Miers, anyone?) – without having ever been elected into those positions.
