Mitt Romney Leads in Iowa, Tommy Thompson Polls Fourth

by Sean Hackbarth

How Tommy Thompson’s Iowa strategy doing? In the latest Des Moines Register poll he’s in fourth place with 7%. Sen. John McCain is ahead of him by 10 points. Tommy will have to go something on the national stage to make him look Presidential after two bad debate performances. Thompson’s plan of retail politicking can be effective in Iowa, but messing up a question because you had to go to the bathroom and appearing to not know much about a federal government you helped run doesn’t inspire confidence in caucus-goers.

We also know why there’s hasn’t been stories on why Mitt Romney’s campaign hasn’t imploded despite low national poll numbers. He’s leading in both Iowa and New Hampshire. With the compressed primary schedule a candidate who won both early contests would be the dominant front runner. His competitors would have a tough time stopping his momentum.

What’s interesting is the Iowa Electronic Markets. Traders there think Rudy Giuliani, McCain, and “other,” Fred Thompson presumably have a better chance than Romney.

Fred Thompson wasn’t part of the poll. I am being totally serious when I say at least a third of Tommy’s support were hoping “Fred” was his middle name.
