Mr. President, Let it Die
President Bush wants the Senate to take another crack at a comprehensive immigration bill:
President Bush considers it premature to declare the immigration reform bill dead in the Senate, White House adviser Dan Bartlett said Friday.
A motion to cut off debate on the measure failed Thursday night, stopping the proposal from coming up for a vote. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had said earlier that if the motion was not approved, it would be “over with … gone.”
But Bartlett told CNN that Bush wants Reid to consider putting the bill back on the table.
It’s one thing to be steadfast and doing what one thinks is right. But politics is the art of the possible. A big, giant bill won’t get out of the Senate. it’s not going to happen. Bush has ticked off his base in a way no one would have predicted in 2004. A smaller bill focused on enforcing current law would muster conservative support, but probably wouldn’t get past the Democrats. An immigration bill is dead. Kaput.
Bush’s political capital is spent. Let him fight the Iraq War, focus on Afghanistan, and keep a watchful eye on Iran and North Korea. The domestic agenda is over to be left to 18 men and women fighting for the Presidency.
