Giuliani’s 12 Commitments

by Sean Hackbarth

Is Rudy Giuliani intentionally sounding like he’s found the Lord (like Paris Hilton)? Today, in New Hampshire the Republican candidate announced his “Twelve Commitments” should he be elected President:

  1. I will keep America on offense in the Terrorists’ War on Us.
  2. I will end illegal immigration, secure our borders, and identify every non-citizen in our nation.
  3. I will restore fiscal discipline and cut wasteful Washington spending.
  4. I will cut taxes and reform the tax code.
  5. I will impose accountability on Washington.
  6. I will lead America towards energy independence.
  7. I will give Americans more control over, and access to, healthcare with affordable and portable free-market solutions.
  8. I will increase adoptions, decrease abortions, and protect the quality of life for our children.
  9. I will reform the legal system and appoint strict constructionist judges.
  10. I will ensure that every community in America is prepared for terrorist attacks and natural disasters.
  11. I will provide access to a quality education to every child in America by giving real school choice to parents.
  12. I will expand America’s involvement in the global economy and strengthen our reputation around the world.

On abortion Rudy’s taking a functional line. He supports a woman’s right to an abortion but seeks to reduce them through adoptions and probably increased birth control funding. It’s a Republican version of the Clintonian “rare, safe, and legal” approach. In his back pocket he wants “strict constructionist” judges. They are the type that are most likely to overturn Roe v. Wade. Giuliani is trying to play both sides.

Not surprisingly Rudy emphasizes the war and homeland security. He wins on continuing America’s aggressive approach in the Islamist War, but when it comes to ensuring “that every community in America is prepared for terrorist attacks and natural disasters” I fear a Congress of either party will turn that into a pork barrel bonanza.

While being platitudes and more mission statements than actual policy we see Giuliani offering voters what his Presidency would entail.

Did he write that on a bar napkin between visits to airport tarmacs? And what is he going to do with all those non citizens he identifies? Ethnically cleanse them? Give ‘em all union cards? Send them to Iraq?

I dunno. I think there is such a thing as thinking abortions should be legal in some states–perhaps even most–but not wanting them to be resorted to as often as they are nowadays. And I’m sure that there are lots of people out there who would like to keep abortion legal, but do not regard Roe v. Wade as sound law.

Of course, there’s also a guy out there named Fred Thompson, and I’m not positive he doesn’t enter into the equation . . .
