McCain Locked into MSM Box

by Sean Hackbarth

The lazy MSM have caught Sen. John McCain in their narrative trap. Once he was the adored candidate praised for his “straight talk” and maverick status. Today, the storyline is McCain’s campaign is floundering. Matt Lewis reports:

Anyone who knows the media, knows they basically decide on a narrative, and then stick with it … until it gets boring. For example, the narrative that John McCain was a “maverick” was a great story … back in 2000.

Well, the new narrative is that McCain’s campaign is falling apart. For this reason, the Washington Post featured a huge story on John Dowd’s flip from McCain to Romney. The truth of the matter is that Dowd raised less than $7K for McCain — but you can’t let that fact get in the way of a good story …

Conversely, the media has chosen to ignore the fact that Utah’s state Senate Majority Leader has defected from Romney to McCain.

The reason? Flipping to McCain doesn’t fit the template or the narrative that the media has created. As such, it is barely mentioned.

I’m no fan of the Arizona Senator, but I know a lazy, unquestioning media when I see it.

It’s a fact McCain has gone from inevitable Republican nominee to a candidate on a cliff about to tumble over. Part of it is his staid campaign, but much of it comes from McCain cutting against the conservative base. Few were happy with his “Gang of 14″ judiciary compromise. Only Fred Thompson was pleased with McCain-Feingold. Now, McCain has taken on a riotous mass on immigration. One’s support has to dwindle when challenging the same people you’re trying to court.

So McCain’s campaign is in trouble but only because he’s standing up for what he feels is best for the nation. Such selflessness doesn’t fit into the cynical MSM’s constricting, narrative box.

Part of it is also the fact that somebody more liberal than McCain (Giuliani) has shown up in the Pubbie nomination process.

So why are you willing to question the media’s McCain narrative but are also willing to swallow the “Ron Paul is a nutjob who blames America for 9/11″ narrative being perpetuated by the same media?

Actually the last death watch I saw issued was over on Fraley’s blog. It’s not just an MSM meme. The “Draft Folksy Fred” people are growing away from McCain.

He’s running so hard to his right that he’s going to double back on himself before long.

It hasn’t been that long ago that McCain would have been an acceptable compromise candidate. The fact that the drumbeat on the Right has lead him to chase the primary votes in a crowded field have muddied his message and made him undesirable to almost everyone.

I’m not following the MSM when it comes to Rep. Ron Paul. Really they’re not covering him much at all. I’m listening to what he’s saying and am not buying it.

This is from a person who wishes Paul wasn’t so kooky on foreign policy as to have people brush off his constitutionalist arguments.

And I wish his constitutionalist arguments weren’t so kooky that people discount what he’s saying about America’s future on the world stage.

Does that make us, together, the perfect Paul voter or does that make him the perfectly unelectable candidate?

I have yet to hear you explain exactly what is “kooky” about basically echoing what the bipartisan 9/11 commission said. What, just writing him off as “kooky” without going into detail (save whitewashing and mangling his–and the 9/11 commission’s–opinions as “blaming the victim”) is enough to dismiss him? Weak sauce.
