Bloomberg Declares His Independence
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg changing his status from “Republican” to “independent” means he’s seriously considering running for President next year. You don’t make a big deal out of it by releasing a statement if it’s simply bringing “my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our City.”
Leaving the GOP doesn’t hurt the party since Bloomberg was a RINO who used the party for the inside track to becoming mayor. Instead of spending his cash on a Democratic primary fight he couldn’t win he became a Republican and ran on Rudy Giuliani’s coat tails. It worked showing he’s not a political moron just a shape-shifter.
Bloomberg’s strength is successfully building a multi-billion-dollar media business and managing New York City. His major weakness is his lack of a public personality. Outside New York only political junkies know who Bloomberg is. Charisma doesn’t ooze from his pores. My box of Cheerios has more personality than Michael Bloomberg. He won’t wow anyone. None of Ross Perot’s feistiness resides in the new independent.
Rich Moran discounts Bloomberg’s “vanity” campaign because politics and business are different–we do give them different names for a reason:
Having the golden touch at making money and governing the United States of America represent two different skill sets. Why we would think that someone successful in business would be able to translate that skill into being able to deal with al-Qaeda? Or reform entitlements? It won’t wash with the voters. It never has.
Now, if Arnold Schwarzenegger were eligible to serve as President he would be a centrist with a real shot winning as an independent.
