Senator Pete Domenici Wants Iraq Troops Out of Combat Operations

by Sean Hackbarth

The clock ticked closer to the end of the Iraq War. Sen. Pete Domenici heard from constituents and has grown tired of the war and is utterly frustrated with the Iraqi government:

The six-term lawmaker, party loyalist and former staunch war supporter represents one of the most significant GOP losses to date. Speaking to reporters at a news conference in Albuquerque, Domenici said he began to question his stance on Iraq late last month, after several conversations with the family members of dead soldiers from his home state, and as it became clear that Iraqi leaders are making little progress toward national reconciliation.

“We cannot continue asking our troops to sacrifice indefinitely while the Iraqi government is not making measurable progress,” Domenici said. “I do not support an immediate withdrawal from Iraq or a reduction in funding for our troops. But I do support a new strategy that will move our troops out of combat operations and on the path to coming home.”

Time’s running out. Successful surge or not Congressional patience is getting thinner. Allahpundit notes only 16 Republican Senators are needed to override a Bush veto. They have four. The only hope I can see is if the Iraqi government can get its act together. Right now, that’s not looking good.

General Domenici. Yeah, right.

Domenici may be reflecting the stance that the White House will eventually adopt as the ‘08 season approaches. A slow-mo withdrawal from advanced hazardous surge positions back to “enclaves” in a suburban zone near Baghdad and other urban centers. A little like Vietnam, but here the unrest is genuinely between ethnic & religious & AQ.

BTW, AQ is now admitting it is taking a licking, but the MSM has no truck with good news during this war & that AQ self-assessment is not being disseminated. Honest reporters like John Burns at the NYT are being ignored and young TV suck-ups know that bad news is what their editorial bosses want to hear—so it remains the explosion of the day. The Tet syndrome repeats itself. Some Repubs will bow to the prevailing winds & the stupidly conducted expedition to Iraq will slowly retreat.

Like the Euroweenie left, the Dems exult in non-performance & national self-abasement.

Or – and this is just a speculative alternative to your right-wing horseshit – maybe, just possibly, the reason that the media, which has been sympathetic to Bush throughout the entire Iraq war to the extent of publishing his repeated distortions and misinformation without question (see Judith Miller), has been portraying Iraq as a shithole is because they have no choice but to portray it as a shithole – because it really is a shithole.

You know, like some of us predicted it would be from the very beginning.
