The Language on the Money Isn’t Important

by Sean Hackbarth

A Dallas grocery chain will be accepting pesos as payment. This is making Michelle Malkin go bonkers:

Sovereignty? What sovereignty? Borders? What borders?

Someone should inform Malkin that if she goes to parts of Minnesota, Michigan, and New York she’ll find businesses that accept Canadian currency. No one fears an invasion from the Great White North because of that.

Currency is merely a means of payment. It’s used so we don’t have to barter things. Instead of Farmer John paying for the fuel for his tractor with milk his cows produced he sells the milk for money and used that to by the fuel. John could care less if that money was U.S. dollars, British Pounds, Mexican Pesos, Roman gold coins, or beads. He would use whatever currency his fuel supplier would accept.

The value people impose on the currency is more important than where it was printed. Malkin needs to keep away from watching too much Lou Dobbs.

Dammit, Sean. If you insist upon making sense like that you’ll never fit into any of the boxes we have prepared for you.

There are Americans who go to Cancun and never pass a peso.

It’s not like Dallas is as close to Mexico as, say, Buffalo is to Canada, or even as close as the Twin Cities. It’s not even as if Dallas is a major tourist destination. It would be as if a business in Des Moines, Iowa started taking Candian dollars.

So, the U.S. is what, $8,000,000,000,000 in the red?

Why don’t we print the cash in foreign currency, including yen, pesos and Euros, et al. and pay off the debt?

Grumps, economic illiteracy is common across ideologies.

Steve, in a globalized economy location isn’t as important. It especially isn’t as important when money can turn into bits with a push of the keyboard. Anything can be traded as long as both parties agree to the exchange.

King Panteen, as for debt, if you can get a foolish creditor to accept your currency more power to you.

Yeah, while I typically appreciate Malkin’s perspective, she can be a bit over the top some times :) . By the way, I am trying to get a conservative digg alternative going called GOP Hub (GOPhub.com). Anything you can do to help get the word out would be awesome. Plus you can post links on it to any articles you write here on your blog. At any rate, have a great weekend and keep up the good work!

There are many countries in the world that you can use American dollars to make purchases and they’ll happily give you (roughly) the correct change back. If currency exchange is an issue, the store next door has a guy willing to exchange your currency.

Somehow they weren’t offended.

I have a confession to make…

When I returned from a trip to Israel in 1985, I gave a few shekel coins out as presents. I didn’t realize what I did was un-American.Five years ago on a business trip to Reynosa, Mexico, I accidentally paid for my lunch i ……

James, I won’t tell Malkin. I promise.

Sean Hack-b. Let’s print the extra dollars to pay off the debt and not fool with the other stuff.

How else are we gonna pay up?

Grumps - Nice post!

Sean - Exactly right. Type of currency doesn’t matter. And I’d rather see the small businessmen make the profit on the currency exchange than the huge banks…
