The Obligatory Scott Thomas Post
Webloggers are challenging The New Republic over a story written by an American soldier in Iraq writing under the name Scott Thomas. His stories speak of cruelty and barbaric behavior by U.S. soldiers. Michael Goldfarb’s post summarizes Thomas’ claims.
The latest on the story is Thomas is actually Scott Thomas Beauchamp with an “interesting” weblog. It’s also been suggested that Beauchamp got his writing gig because he’s the husband/fiance/boyfriend of a TNR staffer.
Ace is having a field day blasting TNR editor Franklin Foer so much he might think he’s been serving in Baghdad.
Ultimately TNR’s reputation rests with the accuracy of Beauchamp’s reports. Even if the magazine was sloppy in its fact-checking it will be forgotten if the awful things Beauchamp wrote about actually happened.
