Newt Won’t Defend Gonzales
On Fox News Sunday Newt Gingrich wouldn’t defend Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
Think Progress posted the transcript:
Both the president and country are better served if the attorney general is a figure of competence. Sadly, the current attorney general is not seen as any of those things. I think it’s a liability for the president. More importantly, it’s a liability for the United States of America.
On the questions surrounding anti-terrorist surveillance programs Gonzales may not have perjured himself. Instead, he might have sputtered out enough incoherence on more than one program to confuse Senators and the public. Should we be shocked? Look at Gonzales’ boss, not the epitome of clear speaking.
Rick Moran writes,
What we have today is an Attorney General who can’t seem to explain to Congress the various intelligence activities being carried out by the NSA to catch terrorists before they can strike here in the US. Part of that is certainly the fact that much of it is classified (something the AG offered to clarify in closed session – Democrats refused, wanting their circus to be televised). But beyond that, Gonzalez can’t seem to summon the coherence to differentiate between the already acknowledged “Terrorist Surveillance Program” and “other intelligence activities” being carried out by NSA.
Gonzales has lost the confidence of everyone except the one person that matters, President Bush. Only Bush can be the one to replace him at Justice, and he should. The public embarrassment has gone one long enough.
