We Won’t Be Fooled Again–Unless We’re The New Republic

by Sean Hackbarth

The New Republic got fooled again by one of their writers writing stories editors wished so much to be true that they failed to give them the appropriate, critical examination. The most famous embarrassment was Stephen Glass making up stories. Now, we have the sad, pathetic case of Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp and his swiss cheese diaries from Iraq. Michael Goldfarb at The Weekly Standard reports Beauchamp signed a statement saying his stories were made up. That flies in the face of TNR editors defending the pieces after the supposed thorough “re-reporting” of the pieces.

TNR sort of disputes The Weekly Standard but Fox News reports Army investigators found Beauchamp made his stories up.

Except that he hasn’t seen the statement.

Somebody’s not telling the truth here, that’s certain. There’s not enough reason to believe that it’s Beauchamp, at this point.
