Leading the GOP on the Internet

by Sean Hackbarth

A Nielsen/NetRatings analysis shows Fred Thompson as the most popular GOP candidate site in July:

Among Republicans, the newest candidate, Fred Thompson, led the way with the most visitors in July even though he just joined the race Wednesday night. Some 381,000 people visited Thompson’s site in July. Only 124,000 visited Rudy Giuliani’s site and 116,000 visited Mitt Romney’s. Even though he got the most eyeballs, Thompson didn’t keep them for very long, according to Nielsen. Visitors stayed an average of about 90 seconds, compared with nearly seven minutes on Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s campaign site and 7 1/2 minutes on Giuliani’s. Nielsen’s NetRatings service estimates traffic to the presidential Web sites using custom Internet tracking methodology, including a panel of members whose Internet usage is recorded.

Back in July, Fred was testing the waters and the website lacked content. Now, it’s packed with information, videos, and the ability for supporters to help Fred in a lot of different ways. The new features should help him continue leading the Republicans when it comes to all things internet.

I was just cruising over there, Sean. The blogs are set up so that only Fred’s friends can see the comments. I’m not asking for permisssion to post but I’m not ready to sign up for a mailing list just to lurk, either.

It has been my observation that people tend to see the pop-up that requests them to register as a Friend of Fred and get either confused or scared away. If that is why the site visit times are lower, they should do away with the pop-up and let the visitor go strait to the main content. Allowing a visitor to signup after they have browsed around seems to better a better practice at all times, IMHO.
