Fred Thompson’s Tone Unfairly Disappoints

by Sean Hackbarth

Robert Bluey and David Freddoso both were disappointed with Fred Thompson’s speech in Michigan this past weekend. Bluey called it a “boring and uninspiring speech that was more appropriate for someone running for president of the Rotary Club rather than president of the United States.” Freddoso said Fred needs to “speak with a bit more energy.” In reference to last Friday’s NRA speech Jim Geraghty thinks Fred looks better in person than on television.

Yes, I’m biased, but I didn’t hear the meanderings. Fred was thoughtful and intelligent. He mentioned Michigan’s own conservative godfather, Russell Kirk and his landmark book The Conservative Mind. From my impression, having only paged through the book, he remembered much of Kirk’s thesis about the unchanging wisdom of the ages.

Fred isn’t Mr. Dynamite. He’s not a rah-rah guy. During his acting career he didn’t show that. His roles were about seriousness, gravitas. That’s what Fred displays when speaking, and I think that’s what people who aren’t political junkies appreciate. Why that is happening when he was an actor, I don’t know. For whatever reason, Fred is doing somethings right. There has to be some reason Fred’s gotten a nice boost in the polls.

Watch the speech and decide for yourselves.

I’ve seen Fred Thompson give a speech in person, and he is sincere, thoughtful and serious. Fred understands that there are crucial decisions to make regarding the problems that we face as a country. He voices concern, wisdom and a belief that we can do better as a nation, and he’s not trying to entertain us. A friend of mine said it best; “He doesn’t speak in sound bytes.” We need real leadership, and I trust Fred to lead our country.

I really appreciated these two videos, it is a very pleasant and refreshing experience to be able to sit down and watch and listen “on my own time”. To be able to share a caring constructive speech from the candidate’s mind and heart to American people, which melds so well with my own thinking about the important issues to our country now and to the world, in the near future– Sorry guys, Fred speaks well to me, he’s my favorite candidate for President in ‘08 –he cares about me and my family!
I will work for FRED!

Mebbe I’m just getting old, (well yes, I am) but I could use less rah-rah.

Rather the quiet thoughtfullness of ‘Ol Fred than the maniacal laughter of a fraudulent Hillary.

That and a wee bit of Jameson 12-yr.

[Side bar: fwiw, the two posts above have the obvious smell of plants, and I ain’t talkin’ rhododendrons. I haven’t been around much lately, so if I’m wrong, I’m wrong. However, as they come off way too gushy-for-fred scripted for regular folk conversation it’s hard to think otherwise. If that is the direction TAM is going to go, well, then that is what is truly disappointing.]

MjM - Mmmmm…a wee bit of Jameson’s 12 year..yum.

I don’t have much of an issue with Fred’s speaking - sure, I wish he’d be a little more dynamic, but that’s a minor point - but I’m still waiting for something in depth on where he stands on health care and immigration. I may be missing this stuff on the website, so Sean, if you have any links, I’d appreciate them.

To Fred’s credit, I understand where he stands on Iraq quite clearly.

MjM, I haven’t seen anything to convice me that Fred is thoughtful at all. He has gotten mileage from being cryptic but that facade is falling away rapidly.

I agree that fraser and his CAPS, above, have the smell of a plant but joan sounds like one of the true believers hoping that Fred is the second coming of The Gipper. I predict that she’ll wind up swallowing hard and voting for Rudy a year from now.

Ya’ll ‘prolly won’t see this as it’s off the front page but just a couple/three of thoughts anyway…

I think what bugs me most is that these two plants actually think that such 3rd-grade blurbs are going to change somebody’s mind. I don’t even talk down to my beagle in such a manner and I find it insulting that Friends-O-Fred or whoever think it necissary to play silly games.

Chancellor:
Yes, J12 on two rocks. My fave. And you are right about the substance thing. Tho as I alluded to prior I’ve been reallybusybusybusy and have been unable to pay much attention. (Not that there isn’t more than a year to mull it all over!)

Grumps:
The parts that were silliest were;

A) Joans’ “Fred understands that there are crucial decisions to make”. Ah-yup. A campaign throw-off line if ever there was one that means absolutely positively nothing whatsoever. Hell, *I* understand there are crucial decisions to make. Does that qualify me? Eeeya-ha-ha. Not bloody likely.

B) jfrasers’ eerily Vulcan-like, “..which melds so well with my own thinking.” Creepy.

J? Dude? Put down the poster paint, walk outside, and breath deep.

So anyway, I’ve caught Thompson (and really, can we dump the cutesy first-name basis thing, too?) in interviews both Poli and Holly, saw some of the NRA Q&A on CSPAN, etc., and I do think he is a thoughtful intelligent fella. He’s not Slick. Which is worth something in my book.

FWIW, Joan’s post above is not scripted, it came from her heart. I know Joan personally and she is just a voter who supports Fred. She lives in the vicinity of St. Lawrenceburg and was able to see him there. Some of us should be so lucky! MjM, not to get all rah rah, but I do support Fred wholeheartedly. I’m in Phoenix and when he rolls through this neck of the woods, I hope I’m able to get remotely close to cheer him on.
