$9.11 Party

by Sean Hackbarth

Tacky:

A spokeswoman for Rudy Giuliani says it is unfortunate that a supporter throwing a party that aims to raise $9.11 per person for the Republican’s presidential campaign is asking for that amount.

Abraham Sofaer is having a fundraiser at his Palo Alto, Calif., home on Wednesday, when Giuliani backers across the country are participating in the campaign’s national house party night.

But Sofaer said he had nothing to do with the “$9.11 for Rudy” theme.

“There are some young people who came up with it,” Sofaer said when reached by telephone Monday evening. He referred other questions to Giuliani’s campaign.

“I’m just providing support for him. He’s an old friend of mine,” Sofaer said of Giuliani.

Passing it off on “some young people” is lame. Sofaer “given nearly $50,000 to Republican causes and candidates, including Giuliani, since 1995.” He knows what he’s doing and how these events are planned.

I disagree with Steven Taylor. The fundraiser should continue. Simply change the name and the price of admission. Mistakes happen. It’s an error in judgement, but not one that should be crippling.

Actually, I didn’t opine as to whether it should go on or not. I just found a) the whole thing a tad crass and b) amusing that no one wanted to take responsibility for the event.

I will say that I am tired of Rudy’s campaign being based essentially on: I was the mayor on 9/11!

Steven, when you wrote, “So, everyone seems vaguely embarrassed by the whole 9/11 theme, but Sofaer is going to have the party and Rudy is going to take the cash,” that seemed to me you prefer the fundraiser not take place and Rudy not take the contributions.

Even though I’m working for one of Rudy’s opponents when the biggest even in recent history is Sep. 11 Rudy would be a fool not to wrap himself in it. Without that event no one would have considered him a Presidential contender.

And this is why his campaign is doomed to failure.
