Newt’s Not Running

by Sean Hackbarth

Newt Gingrich says he won’t feel out a possible run for President because, in his spokesman’s words, “It is legally impermissible for him to continue on as chairman of American Solutions (for Winning the Future) and to explore a campaign for president.” Okay. That’s a legalese way out of it. I think he wasn’t planning on running and would use not getting $30 million in pledges as his excuse. Expecting that in 22 days was over-the-top thinking that could only come from Newt.

Don’t feel bad for Newt. He gets to be a Republican ideas man. By giving speeches, writing books, and doing radio commentaries he will continue to have a following. Newt’s 64 so a future Presidential race isn’t out of the question. In Ed Morrissey’s words, “He will have his national constituency, a bipartisan reputation, and a record of providing practical solutions over vitriol. He will be positioned as this century’s Teddy Roosevelt.”

The big question is “Who will Newt endorse, if anyone?”

So the stage is set for the 2008 race. All the Democrats and Republicans who want in are in. We will await the Unity 08 ticket if only for their three days of media attention.

I’d pay $30 million for some of the candidates not to run. And I’d pay $30 million, assuming I had the money, for Gingrich to run, in part because he understands what bad shape the Republican Party is in.

Republican support has plummeted over the past 10 years. Gingrich understands that, and he understands it has to change. The rest are really grasping at the old verities and offering very little new. But Gingrich, whatever his failings, would offer something new. He’d be the most interesting person in the race. The conventional view is Thompson’s in, there’s no space for him. That’s absurd. There’s space for him.
