Ron Paul’s Nerd Revolution

by Sean Hackbarth

Time on Rep. Ron Paul’s followers:

“He’s about something that American nerd culture can get on board with: really knowing one subject and going all out on it,” says Ben Darrington, a Ron Paul supporter at Yale. “For some people, it’s Star Wars. For some people, it’s Japanese cartoons. For Ron Paul, it’s free-market commodity money.”

Nothing wrong with geeking out. What troubles me are the loons who are spamming for Paul as well as those who “want to keep our powder dry” and bombard Paul’s campaign with $10 million in donations on 11.05. That happens to be Guy Fawkes Day, remembering the Brit who tried blowing up the House of Parliament. At the minimum that’s creepy.

And I agree with Rick Moran. Paul may be oblivious to the negative actions of a few of his followers:

The question isn’t whether Ron Paul believes in any of these conspiracy theories, although he has said on at least two occassions that he believes the investigation into 9/11 must be reopened to explore “unanswered questions” about the tragedy. It is his apparent pandering to this lunatic fringe that must be explored and reasons for it demanded from the campaign.

I say “apparent” pandering because there is the possibility that Paul is completely clueless that his anti-government rants (a subjective word but apt if you listen to his speeches or watch him in the debates) full of dark hints of conspiracy and wrongdoing by the highest officials in the land, actually ring a Pavlovian bell for the paranoid conspiracy freaks causing them to flock to his banner.

After a surge of media attention Paul can no longer use ignorance as an excuse. The best thing for him would be to to loudly denounce the spammers and internet intimidators. I’m afraid that won’t happen.

[Yes, more Ron Paul commentary. I’ve accepted my plight.]

It is opinions like yours that disgust me. I am a 38 year old CIO with a D.Sc in Computer Science. Am I the “geek” type that you describe? One of my best friends, an attorney, happens to also be supporting Ron Paul. In addition, another friend of mine a Dentist also happens to be supporting Ron Paul. I would suggest that before you go writing opinions like this you at least base it on facts. Nice to see you work for “Friends of Fred Thompson, Inc.” — What exactly do you folks do anyway, keep him awake until at least 8 PM?

Paul supporters are some of the most thin-skinned people I’ve come across. It reaffirms my hypothesis that many of these people have little campaign experience.

Brett, I didn’t insult geeks. When it comes to politics and political economy (like Paul, I too am a fan of the Austrian school of economics). And what facts did I fail to mention? There’s evidence fringe Ron Paul supporters are spamming websites. There’s also clear evidence that some Paul backers

It’s quite ironic that you want me to keep to the facts in a comment full of bile.

the “Pavlovian bell” quote was good, but Rick would have been more accurate if he’d just put a period after the 14th word in that second paragraph.

“my hypothesis that many of these people have little campaign experience.”

You could just as easily say they have little political experience.

Brett, get a grip. And get over the whole “I’m a CIO with a DSc, my friends are lawyers, dentists and important people” bit. You’re just another blog troll on the net.

Hey Sean,

Ron Paul passed your boy Thompson over at intrade this morning for the first time. Paul is now at 9% to get the Republican nomination, Thompson is at 8.1% (and dropping like a rock — he was in the 20s a couple of weeks ago).

Don’t shoot the messenger,

How to Whip This Ron Paul Character and All His Whacky Followers.

Ron Paul can be defeated by ignorance. Ignore him if you can.
By lies. Misrepresent his positions whenever possible.
By word gaming. As Lenin advised, “First, confuse the vocabulary.”
By contempt. Dismiss him as amusing and pathetic.
By smearing his supporters. Find the worst and spotlight them. Call them a cult.
By consensus. Dismiss him with peer-pressure ridicule.
By false accusations. Spread them quickly and far.
By never discussing his policies. Change the subject to his person.
By the polls. Ask the right people the right questions and get the answer you want.
By reporting his most unpopular votes. But don’t report his reasoning.
By rudeness. Wreck any debate where his ideas are winning.
With all these tools, he can be easily defeated. Use them generously.

But Ron Paul cannot be defeated by refuting him in an honest and courteous technical debate. Avoid that.

Disinter,

Change that from “How to Whip Ron Paul” to “How to whip the left” and you have the standard conservative debate handbook down pat.

The reality of it is that the spamming may only be something that campaign people care about… like you. For the average person, it’s hardly a blip on the radar.

Nick, the reality is computer science researchers and a Wired News reporter were interested. This story has gone slightly beyond mere eCampaign geeks like myself.

Paul has said at least twice as well that he wouldn’t call 9/11 an inside job. When he calls for another investigation, he means he wants to find the true breakdown in our policies and systems that led to the attacks.
