Fred Thompson Tax Plan Released and Fox News Sunday Video

by Sean Hackbarth

This morning Fred Thompson released his tax relief plan. I think it’s a bold, conservative move that does what Republicans do best: put more money back in taxpayers’ pockets.

Fred would make the Bush tax cuts permanent, repeals the death tax, ditch the Alternative Minimum Tax, and ease the tax burdens of small business. All these are standard Republican fare. But Fred has turned it up a notch (to steal from Emmeril Lagasse) by throwing out the idea of taxpayer choice. People could choose to pay under the current, monstrous tax code or choose a flatter code.

Fred announced his plan on Fox News Sunday. Here’s the entire interview:

Near the end Fred went after Fox News critics who have brushed off his campaign:

FOX is firmly in the Guiliani camp. Keep your eyes peeled, Sean, as you follow FOX’s coverage of the campaign. Murdoch wants his buddy in the White House.

Isn’t this pretty much to Paul Ryan idea he brought up earlier this year?

Also, it’s Roger Ailes; pretty much the CEO of Fox News Channel, who’s Rudy’s buddy. Newsweek has had the story for sometime now.

Which federal programs does he plan on eliminating in order to pay for all these cuts?

Argh. Thanks for the correction Kevin.

Can I choose the flattest tax code (zero percent) available with Ron Pay?

Or, do I have to settle for a sizable, non-zero, but “flatter” rate with Senator Fred?

I’ve never been terribly impressed by Fred Thompson, but even I wasn’t expecting his little hissy fit about Fox. If he honestly thinks Fox has an agenda against him, then he’s too flat-out delusional to be President - especially since he’s reaped the benefits of how much free-ride airtime on Hannity & Colmes while all the other candidates were actually debating?

(Oh, I forgot - holding Fred to the same standards as every other candidate is “Beltway thinking” or “old-style campaigning” or whatever the heck that line is. Sorry.)

Fox has drawn light to Fred’s warts. Just like they reported Romney’s hunting story and Giuliani’s Bernie Kerik problems, for example. What constitutes an agenda, in Fred’s mind - being held to close scrutiny? If so, then he’s not only delusional, but thin-skinned and arrogant. I don’t want any of those qualities in my President.

Fred Thompson was supposed to be some sort of conservative messiah, we were told. Instead he’s shown himself to be a monumental embarrassment.
