Fred Thompson Endorses John McCain

by Sean Hackbarth

Fred Thompson endorsed Sen. John McCain:

“This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,” Thompson said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. They’re both good friends and if you followed the Presidential race closely Thompson rarely attacked McCain. That wasn’t something Fred was comfortable with.

Dont’ expect a McCain/Thompson ticket. The traditional purpose of a VP candidate is to take shots at the opponents. That wasn’t Thompson’s style. He wanted to talk about issues like national security and entitlement reform.

Fred’s endorsement doesn’t mean McCain gets the support of the FredHeads. McCain will need to continue reaching out and addressing the concerns of conservative critics like myself. After the years of McCain ignoring some conservatives and spiting them it will take time to win them over.

Perhaps I am not surprised because Thompson is a party loyalist, but I am disappointed. This is a serious attempt to bring in the true conservatives to the fold, but McCain has many fences to mend especially with those of us in border states like Texas. And if he runs, as a suspect he will, with Huckabee, there are many conservative who will see that as capitulation. I would rather see Dems in the White House so that Republicans can’t get blamed for the flurry of liberal policies that Congress is planning to push through the pipe and try to get some leverage at the midterms.

Fred said he would support the nominee and we know the distain Fred has for Huckabee. At least Fred has the experience of knowing McCain for many years personally. There’s a difference, when you really think about it.The sometimes liberal is better than a full time liberal. I’d take McCain over Huckabee anyday.I’m a Fredhead ans it realyy is tuff to say this since I really thought the conservatives mwould back Fred and well what have they got to say for themselves now?

Fred was my best hope. Although as a long time McLean VA resident I had doubts if he really understood the immigration issue. With this McCain endorsement, it proves Fred never really got it.

Why why, on God’ green earth, do you wander off onto the Social Security issue? Immigration is white hot. Social Security isn’t. This is when I knew he didn’t care about getting elected.

Well it was an experimental run. And it proved you really can’t go back to the early 20th century. Too bad for us!

And McCain .. can a leopard change his spots? Again and again and again he has REFUSED to refute his “comprehensive” immigration bill. He would allow all four open-borders governors “certify” the border is secured. How transparent can you get? And yet all the party hacks are just fine with it. Just shows you how screwed up this party is. Beyond repair as far as I’m concerned.

I made my first political contribution ever to Fred. I ordered my first political bumper stickers and coffee mugs and golf balls from Fred. I made my first political phone calls for Fred. I got involved in following a primary for the first time because of Fred. I cannot express the depth of my disappointment in Fred for supporting McCain. I am no Huckabee lover; but when faced with Huckabee or McCain, I go Huckabee. He is the most conservative Republican left, so I go to him versus giving in. Simply put, I will NEVER (and there are tons like me) vote McCain. I would rather have Obama or Clinton take it to us than our own party. Huck I vote, McCain I don’t. Fred’s support for McCain is like a bullet in my gut and as much as I respected Fred and would have campaigned for him, that does not outweigh my dislike of McCain. I hope there are enough in the party to go with the most conservative (albeit, that is left) rather than simply throw in the towel and be told what to do.

Duncan Hunter endorsed Huck. Fred could have as well. Disappointing. It makes me wonder if all the “pundits” were right about what they were saying about Fred when they kept saying that was his end run anyway.

A Sad political moment.

From NJ, we have seen what being other than a True Conservative can do, just look at this pitiful state and its corruption and out of control spending and of course 9/11 and what immigration as a WELFARE STATE can do to Government spending.

Kimberly above has said it all “Fred’s support for McCain is like a bullet in my gut” and as a Vietnam Vet I will never support McCain, I can never support or endorse a Turncoat Politician for any reason.

Republicans and America you deserve McAmnesty and Osama Obama………………
