William F. Buckley, RIP

by Sean Hackbarth

William F. Buckley and Ronald Reagan

William F. Buckley has left us. After Reagan and Goldwater he was the most important conservative of the 20th Century. And thanks to his National Review his influence will long live beyond him. I’ll try to write something more substantial later.

I only disagree to the extent that you suggest that Reagan and Goldwater might have been more important. Ideas matter, and both of these great statesmen relied on Buckley for many ideas, and a great deal of support. I do not think it is unfair to suggest that, without Buckley, neither man would have been nominated by the party.

I came to disagree with some of his policies and philosophies, but a more prominent political mind there was not.
