New York Republicans Threaten to Impeach Spitzer

I’m reluctant to write or link to any stories about Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s impending resignation. I thought it would happen yesterday at his press conference. When that didn’t happen I figured reports were right that it would happen last night. Now, New York Newsday claims something will happen today:
Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco said he and other legislative leaders had received telephone calls from Lt. Gov. David Paterson that Tedisco took as indicating a resignation from Gov. Eliot Spitzer was in the offing.
Speaking on Talk 1300 in Albany, Tedisco said Paterson’s call “indicates there is something that’s going to take place.”
We’ll see.
The Wall Street Journal reports Tedisco is making plans to give Spitzer the boot:
In an interview with CNN, Mr. Tedisco said: “We have asked that the governor resign as soon as possible,” adding that unless he quit within 24 to 48 hours, the Republicans would move forward with impeachment.
“We have to continue with governance here, and this is a total distraction,” he told CNN, adding, “We have a budget we have to get in place within two weeks.”
Mr. Tedisco said Mr. Spitzer has “breached his contract with the people of New York State, not only ethically but legally,” and “has lost all the support” from the public and the leaders in Albany.”
Mr. Tedisco said a resolution was being prepared, but added that they would give the governor time. “He may be making decisions or negotiations with the law enforcement officials in relationship to the legal aspects of this. I think we have to give at least some time to do that,” Mr. Tedisco said.
The WSJ also reports many on Wall Street have big grins on their faces [via memeorandum]. No surprise.
Dan Deibert, being ever-observant, notes Mrs. Spitzer and Jim McGreevey’s wife shared the same fashion thinking.
The only one who got steamrolled was Spitzer.

UPDATE: This Marc Ambinder post shows how little the MSM know about Spitzer’s future.
