Left Defends Iraq Contractor

by Sean Hackbarth

After his trip to Iraq Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) felt the need to tell a story about how he couldn’t get into a gym early in the morning because he didn’t have the proper security credentials. Instead of going back to his room and getting what as needed he demanded to see the guard’s supervisor. In telling the story McHenry called him a “two-bit security guard.”

Talk about arrogance.

Left-wing webloggers jumped on the video. But there’s a minor problem: As Michael Goldfarb reports, Think Progress got the facts wrong (again). The guard is a contractor, not a soldier. The guard might not even be American. However, that doesn’t justify McHenry’s callous riff.

Now that we know the guard is a contractor will the Left go back to calling them mercenaries? McHenry would have been better off saying, “Screw them.”

““Two-Bit Security Guard”? Update: A Contractor, Not a Soldier”

UPDATE: ThinkProgress corrects the post. Poor TP. They’ve had a rough few weeks. [via Protein Wisdom]

One of my commenters says that, having called the Congressman’s office, she was told it was a Panamanian contractor.

I wouldn’t bank that, but I would keep it in my back pocket.

Tom, that makes sense since American security contractors are more likely to be ex-military who would be more useful doing security out in the field.

It still means McHenry acted like a cad and does make the video much less newsworthy.

[…] ThinkProgress runs with it continuing their string of lousy reporting (see the update). […]
