Yahoo Needs to Fix Spam Problem First

by Sean Hackbarth

So Yahoo wants to turn its myriad of services into a humongous social network centered on its e-mail. Ok fine once they get they figure out how to control spam. I’ve had a Yahoo e-mail account since they first started giving them away. I used to use it as a secondary e-mail address. Now, I open it up about once a month because my inbox is filled with thousands of spams. It doesn’t matter if I go through the e-mails and tell Yahoo they’re spam. They keep coming back. Yahoo won’t win me over with their new strategy until they fix a basic element of a basic service.

Do any TAM readers who use Yahoo mail also endure mountains of spam?

I love the POTENTIAL SPAM emails sent to my inbox.

I too had yahoo mail back in the day, but let it go about a year ago because the spam filters didn’t work.

Gmail works better so far. I get maybe a dozen spams in my inbox a month. My spam box gets about 25000 pe month, but I generally don’t bother there.

Opus, GMail figured it out. I get a bunch of spam, but it all goes into the folder where I never have to look at it.

I get spam in my yahoo account, but that is basically because when I have to put in a semi-valid email (one that I have to reply to complete registration) that is the email that I use. So over the course of the last 8 years, I have used that as my ’spam account’ on purpose.

Clint, I understand because I do something similar. However, when I mark an e-mail as spam Yahoo should be smart enough to put it directly into my spam folder the next time it’s sent to me. Yahoo’s spam filter doesn’t work for me.

[...] I’m not the only one grimacing at Yahoo Mail. At least I didn’t make it my primary e-mail client. [...]

Could the sudden recent increase in spam mail arriving in my Yahoo mail box be due to a tweaking of the spam filter by Yahoo to allow more through so that they can sell their new mail plus product, or am I being cynical?
