Al Franken: Damaged Goods

Al Franken gave Democrats the hope of beating Sen. Norm Coleman and getting them closer to a filibuster-proof 60-vote Senate majority. Franken has raised money and gets plenty of attention due to his celebrity his prospects for victory are eroding due to his business mismanagement:
Republicans, who for more than a year have eagerly unearthed controversial […]

Loathing Yahoo Mail

I’m not the only one grimacing at Yahoo Mail. At least I didn’t make it my primary e-mail client.
I recently moved my @theamericanmind.com e-mail to Gmail and feel 10x more productive.
“Let Me Count the Ways I Loathe Yahoo Mail“

Learning about Twitter

Twitter is far from a mainstream web tool. Most people who have heard of and use MySpace and Facebook are clueless about Twitter. It’s a nice, little tool to listen and take part in conversations. For those who think having a full-blown weblog is too much trouble Twitter’s 140-character per post limit can let you […]

DNC Follows Obama in Smearing McCain

The RNC has had enough of Democrats completely distorting Sen. John McCain’s mention of U.S. troops possibly being in Iraq for 100 years. Sen. Obama has made the distortion part of his stump speech even after independent observers like the Columbia Journalism Review said he was “outright lying.” (”New politics,” same as the old.”)
What pushed […]

John Gard to Challenge Kagen

John Gard announced he’ll again face Rep. Steve Kagen for Congress. Gard will be running on continuing President Bush’s tax cuts and earmark reform. Gard even took from Sen. McCain and offered some “straight talk.”
It’s a good opportunity for Republicans to take a Democratic seat. They will be few and far between this cycle so […]

Where to Put a Book

Kathryn Jean Lopez wonders why Sen. Barack Obama’s autobiography, Dreams from my Father, is in the African-American section of Barnes and Noble while Justice Clarence Thomas’ My Grandfather’s Son isn’t.
I don’t think it’s any political statement by the bookseller. I base this on eight years of working for the chain. Categorizing a book is an […]

Obama Shoots Down Lincoln-Douglas Debate

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s call for a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate (which really isn’t) received the same reaction as when Fred Thompson proposed it to front-running Republicans last year (back when Mike Huckabee didn’t matter).
Let me disagree with Alan Stewart Carl. If I were Obama I’d avoid this type of debate. Obama’s comparative advantage is his soaring speeches. […]

Obama Pinged Taxpayers

I’ll let others deal with whether Sen. Barack Obama taking a retainer and a campaign contribution from someone with business interests before Illinois state government was a sign of corruption or merely an instance of the infamous “appearance of impropriety.” I want to harp on the fact the State of Illinois thought it was a […]

Shine Light on CFIUS

Josh Trevino urges for transparency when concerns rise about a foreign purchase of a U.S. company:
More recently, CFIUS stopped China’s Huawei, an electronics firm, from buying a minority stake in 3Com. That deal probably should have been allowed to proceed. A Huawei minority stake in 3Com would not meaningfully alter China’s access to those products. […]

Alright! New King’s X Coming

XV, the latest King’s X album, comes out 05.20.08. For a taste the band has “Alright” on their MySpace page. It’s crunchy, funky, and has a great hook.
If you buy XV through the Amazon.com link below a portion of prices goes to support TAM. You know you want to; you really do.

Yahoo Needs to Fix Spam Problem First

So Yahoo wants to turn its myriad of services into a humongous social network centered on its e-mail. Ok fine once they get they figure out how to control spam. I’ve had a Yahoo e-mail account since they first started giving them away. I used to use it as a secondary e-mail address. Now, I […]

Exploiting Waffles

Michael Turk offers some ideas for how Sen. John McCain’s campaign could have taken advantage of Sen. Barack Obama’s waffle quip:
# If you’re John McCain, wherever you are, convene a breakfast of local bloggers the next morning. Call it “The Waffle Side chat” and ask them to come sit down with you and talk issues […]

John McCain: “I Will Be Hamas’ Worst Nightmare”

I took part in another Sen. John McCain weblogger conference call. The North Carolina GOP’s Jeremiah Wright ad garnered most of the questions along with questions about Sen. Obama and William Ayers and foreign policy.
Michael Goldfarb asked why McCain wanted the NC GOP ad pulled. McCain said the inferences in the ad were “unwarranted.” He […]

NC GOP Ad Not that Complicated

The New Republic’s Jason Zengerle thinks he knows the underlying strategy behind the North Carolina GOP’s Jeremiah Wright ad:
I mean, if the NC GOP really wanted the ad to help McCain, wouldn’t they be running this ad in October or November? This is clearly an attempt to play the race and the Wright card against […]
