Economic Geography

Megan McArdle found some interesting maps showing a few aspects of global GDP. Two main conclusions to take from them: 1. the Anglosphere is evident in economic development; and 2. cities on bodies of water still matter.

Republican National Convention Internet Sticker Shock

Ed Morrissey got sticker shock when he looked at internet access prices at the Xcel Center in St. Paul for the 2008 Republican National Convention. The cheapest plan from Qwest is $850 for four days of plugged-in service. After handling his hyperventilation Ed asked the convention’s press office about other options. There are:
Internet access is […]

Hiltons Not Happy with McCain

Even better than ticking off Team Obama, Sen. John McCain’s “Celeb” ad ticked off the Hilton family. Too bad they’ve given a lot of money to McCain:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems that the new McCain ad criticizing Obama for being a celebrity has ruffled some unintended feathers. I, […]

Weekly Jobless Claims Highest Since 2003

Barry Ritholtz points out a real downer to today’s economic numbers. The weekly jobless claims hit 448,000. “That’s the worst level since April 2003.” (Yet we weren’t in a recession then.)
So while I criticize those that downplay the economy things aren’t great. There’s plenty of uncertainty and fear. Who knows if another Bear Stearns or […]

GDP Rises in Second Quarter

We’re still waiting for that recession let alone the depression some have fear was upon us. Today, the Commerce Department reported [PDF] second quarter GDP rose 1.9%, one percentage point higher than the first quarter. Increased exports, decreased imports, and consumer spending due to stimulus rebate checks played key roles in the number.
However, there is […]

McCain Affirms He Won’t Raise Taxes

Sen. John McCain took on the uproar about him leaving the door open to raising taxes as President:
John McCain pushed his message of energy independence at a town hall meeting in Sparks, Nev., on Tuesday, but it was taxes that had questioners buzzing.

Obama Taking Lobbyist Money

Today, Sen. Barack Obama received resounding applause for bragging he doesn’t take contributions from federal lobbyists:

Sen. Barack Obama: “So one of the things we’ve got to do is not just change the healthcare system, but we also got to change our political system. And that’s why I don’t take PAC money. I don’t take […]

Let Me Experience Minnesota Nice

For five years Minnesota was my home. Four of them were in the frozen lands of Duluth going to college. The next year was at my first job in the Twin Cities. I found that despite all the Minnesota Vikings fans the state is full of good, honest people. I’d like to go back in […]

The sooner the better for a Sen. Ted Stevens resignation if National Review Online has its way:
The question is not whether Stevens should resign, but whether he should resign now or after Alaska’s August 26 primary. If he steps aside now, the nomination will go to one of the six relatively unknown Republicans who are […]
