Senate Republican Conference Hires Sean Hackbarth

by Sean Hackbarth

You’ve noticed a significant reduction in weblogging on TAM. That’s because I’m the new online communications advisor for the Senate Republican Conference (SRC). I’m responsible for reaching out to the online community, making conference websites the best they can be, and thinking of new ways to get the Senate Republicans’ message of smaller, smarter government onto the internet. It’s a great opportunity to experiment, play, and educate Republicans about making the internet a more fundamental part of how they communicate with the public.

Over the last week, I’ve been busy settling into the job, starting to develop the overall online strategy for Senate Republicans, and learning about the ways of the Senate. I started while the Senate’s in recess so I have some time to organize myself before a busy September.

What does the mean for TAM? It won’t be going away, but there will be noticeable changes. You won’t see as many purely political posts. Reporters would like nothing better than to create a story about a conflict between this weblog and the SRC. I still plan on writing about what interests me: economics; books; culture; sports; and how technology can be better used in politics.

I encourage you to offer suggestions on how Senate Republicans can better use online technology. I know I don’t have all the answers, so I want to get ideas from you. I will do my best to listen and respond to your ideas.

Congrats on the new job! Get more senators using twitter like @johnculberson he actually responds to people’s twitters and I think that’s totally awesome.

3

Congratulations Sean. They got a man that’s far better than they deserve.

Have you thought about teaching your candidate to use email for a start?

4

Congratulations, Sean.

We miss you back here, though.

5

Way to go Sean, I was going to talk to Barry P. about any positions being open. Now if we could only get a Republican senator from Wi.

6

Congratulations! Finally, my taxes are going to someone decent.

7

What took them so long?

Good job. If anyone can maneuver the shark-filled waters, you can. But it would be fun to get the inside dope… (hint, hint)

8

Congrats on the new gig.

9

Attaboy, Sean.

Congrats.

[…] The Senate Republican Conference has hired Sean Hackbarth as their new online communications guru. Sean is one of the Internet’s original bloggers, having started his blog, The American Mind way back in 1999. Sean and I worked together on the Fred Thompson campaign, he’s a dedicated conservative and will be a tremendous asset to the conference. […]

I belated congrats on your new diggs over there….I was spreading the good word at GenCon with my #dontgo T-shirt :)

Actually had a few people ask me what it meant!

And of course, I obliged.

Happy to hear it. Almost enough to make me consider sending them some money — someday. After the last 8 years, and not getting Fred the nomination, I have been very hesitant to contribute to any of the broader republican groups and instead have focused on supporting specific candidates that I trust.

While having Sean there is not going to change anything, it is good to know they are getting at least one good person.

Balance the budget, manage the border and stop infringing on my liberties and perhaps I’ll be more apt to support ‘Republicans’ instead of just specific candidates.
