V on ABC

by Sean Hackbarth

Here’s further evidence Hollywood is out of ideas. ABC’s bringing back V:

“V,” the 1980s miniseries about alien lizards visiting Earth, will invade primetime once again.

ABC is developing a new adaptation of the franchise — which spawned a second mini and TV spinoff — written by “The 4400″ co-creator/exec producer Scott Peters.

Warner Bros. TV, which was behind the original longform, is once again producing the project, which was sold as a spec script to the Alphabet net.

Peters is set to exec produce, along with HDFilms principal Jace Hall.

Hall, the former head of Warner Bros.’ videogame division who has worked on titles including “F.E.A.R.,” will help expand “V” into other platforms, including gaming.

I’m hoping this is more like Battlestar Galactica than Knight Rider. At least they’re not trying to bring it to the big screen, but expect to be stuck with a bad video game.

We (my spouse and I) really enjoyed the original mini-series “V”, but if this remake really is more like the remake of Battlestar Galactica, we won’t be able to stomach that either.

I personally have a hard time understanding why so many people think the Battlestar Galactica remake is so hot. I predict that in 50 years, the most favorable comment about the remake will be “What WERE they thinking!”

Well I liked the original mini-series. Here’s hoping the new version will remember the spirit of the original which was an allegory of the rise of Naziism and totalitarianism in general.

The sequel and TV series just hurled though.

I love both V the miniseries and BSG. The latter is some of the best sci-fi I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait until 2009 to see how it ends.
