Reading List For Conservatives Too
Kathleen Parker wants subsidized newspapers to increase civics education. Mary Katharine Ham suggests a reading list that wouldn’t subsidize intellectually dishonest, liberal newspapers:
I’m all for young Americans getting a better civic education, but why not do that through assigning readings readily available in all public schools? The Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg Address, and the Federalist Papers are undoubtedly sitting under a thick layer of dust, while “Dylan has Two Mommies” and the companion study guide to “An Inconvenient Truth” are widely distributed.
Good stuff to be sure. The list is so good I wish more conservatives, and that includes webloggers, would dig into this stuff. Lay off the Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity and find some Edmund Burke. The conservative movement would be better off.

“Shenkman even suggests government subsidies for newspaper subscriptions,… Who will govern a free nation if no one understands the mechanics and instruments of that freedom?
Answer: Maybe one day, a demagogue. ” - Parker
In a odd twist, Parker unwittingly promotes that which she pretends to fear.
Hey Kathy, ever hear of “Pravada” ?
“…but also newspapers might be saved. … Actively pursuing information through print media … makes one smarter. ” - Parker
Oh. OK. Now we understand; self-promoting, trying to save her own job.
Kathy seems not to understand that the cat is out of the bag; print news will continue to lose ground because of the way they editorialize entire content.
No amount of subsidy nor civic “lessons” wherein the public is told there is a “right” to health care or Obama’s “justice of redistribution” is a constitutional mandate is going to save the biased rags.
btw, Parker has once again proven my belief that there are many many more Reagan Coat-Tail Riders than true conservative.
