William McNeill’s The Rise of the West

After the disappointing elections the American Enterprise Institute’s Michael Auslin thinks conservatives would do well to find a copy of William McNeill’s The Rise of the West:
McNeill’s name is no longer widely known, least of all in universities, though he is one of the last of our truly great professors. Over his three-plus decades teaching [...]

2008 Weblog Awards Nominations

For the first time in a few years I’m not asking readers to nominate TAM for the Weblog Awards. The past year and a half has been too busy (with working for Fred Thompson and now the Senate Republican Caucus) to believe I deserve an award. But if you know any deserving weblogs nominations are [...]

Hedge Funds’ Future

What happens to the hedge funds after the dust settles on the financial crisis?
So much for that. The hedge fund mystique died with the crash of 2008. Youthful traders and big shots from investment banks won’t soon be given billions to invest based on their résumés. Mystery and opacity will be a negative, not cause [...]

The Wild World of Intrade

The idea behind prediction markets is collecting the a wide variety of information and opinions to predict events. The gathering of scattered bits of knowledge is suppose to result in better predictions. The macro result might be based on reason but digging into the individual grains of emotions and rumors show people have their own [...]

Book Industry Wants Sarah Palin’s Star Power

Booksellers and publishers are worried the economy will make for a miserable Christmas shopping season:
Like many businesses across the retail sector, the publishing industry has been hit by a raft of doom and gloom in the past few weeks. Leonard S. Riggio, chairman and largest shareholder of Barnes & Noble, said in an internal [...]

Sam Adams the Man, Not the Beer

In a review of Ira Stoll’s Samuel Adams: A Life the Founding Father was much more than good name for a modern beer brand:
He started talking independence more than a decade before the Declaration and did more than anyone to organize opposition to colonial taxes and to make “no taxation without representation” a rallying cry. [...]

Giraffes!

Sen. John McCain was okay on Saturday Night Live. Ben Affleck was awful. The only redeeming value from the show was the awesome GIRAFFES! video.

Netbooks for $99

A recession along with the constant cheapening of computers could mean consumers will have the opportunity to buy a tiny, portable computer for $99. The catch would be mobile phone service providers would lock you into a mobile broadband contract:
What that tells me is that a very large number of people are increasingly looking to [...]

Harris Takes It to New York City

This Presidential election has brought a bunch of normal people into the spotlight. There’s Joe Wurzelbacher and my favorite, Gov. Sarah Palin. I now learned James T. Harris will be on Fox & Friends Sunday through next Wednesday. I actually have a reason to watch it.
All it took was James to ask Sen. John McCain [...]

Since Sen. Obama is advertising in video games it’s not a surprise he’s winning the vote from one game.
