Twitter Not Relying on Advertising

by Sean Hackbarth

Twitter will remain free of advertising until they discover selling add-on services won’t pay the bills. Maybe I’m wrong and add-ons will work. Who knew Google would become the internet monster by selling little text ads? Entrepreneurs are on this planet to take big risks. Best of luck to the Twitter guys.

In order to Twitter to actually make money this way they need a way to keep out the competition. Two ways to do that are to block the competition from competing and simply out-competing. I don’t expect them to close down their open API, so they’ll have to out-develop the third-party competitors who are building tools of their own. That’s a tall order, since other than Twitter itself they haven’t built anything awe-inspiring. Remember, Twitter bought Summize for their search.
