Data Factories

In promoting Earth Hour Google failed to look at itself in the mirror. Der Spiegel reports buildings loaded with computers are a big waste of energy. The search giant is mentioned for how electricity costs and access to cooling water have determined the location of one of its data centers:
It is no coincidence that search […]

Fausta’s Skype Problems

The past few days Fausta has been having major difficulties with Skype. Yesterday, she changed her password only to end up being locked out of her account. She sent Skype a customer service request and is still waiting.
I read her post after I set my mother up with Skype so we can call each other […]

Apple Fixes Rush Limbaugh’s Problem

Apple isn’t dumb. Steve Jobs knows it makes good business sense to please a customer like Rush Limbaugh who has millions listening to him daily. Politics doesn’t matter:
An Apple engineer was assigned to us, and the fix took place last night. I did two weeks of trying it, creating logs for the Apple engineers […]

Back on the Grid

Connecting to the hotel wifi has been impossible until this afternoon. I’m guessing all the people at the Politics Online Conference 2008 plugged up the network. It amazes me that at a tech conference connecting to the internet goes down. Sometimes it would be nice having mobile broadband.

My Fridge Doesn’t Need a Firmware Upgrade

Glenn Reynolds points out this Amazon weblog post on upgrading the firmware in a high-def disk player. Sure it will solve problems, but making users deal with electronics’ software is a level of complexity that will only aggravate users.
My television never needed a firmware upgrade. Neither did my VCR and DVD player. When I […]

Playing with Hulu

Hulu invited me to play around with its private beta. So far, the videos play like any other site. I’d embed a clip but it’s too wide for this weblog. I could mess with the code, but that’s a pain when all I want to do is share a clip.
Hulu is interested in letting users […]

Slatecard.com is Open for Business

Conservatives and Republicans have a new tool to support their candidates. Slatecard.com lets users create lists (”slates”) of candidates. It tracks donations and helps you find the candidate’s web site or social networking pages if they have them. This gives activists a one-stop shop to connect with Republican candidates on multiple levels.
I’ve already created my […]

Video: Newt Gingrich in Second Life

As part of Newt Gingrich’s “Solutions Day” he floated into Second Life to lecture. This is geekiness run amok. There’s nothing that happened in that virtual world that couldn’t have taken place on the web with streaming video and a chatroom. Ok, you can’t parachute into the event, but so what? How would those wizbang […]

Bluetooth “Love and Happiness”

A congressman giving a speech while wearing a Bluetooth earpiece doesn’t impress me. I think those things make the wearer look more important than they really are. What does impress me is there’s a Congressman Al Green.

Muni Wifi: “Boondoggle Du Jour for Local Politicians”

Carl Longino rounds up the news about the downfall of municipal wifi. He sees the problem as one of excessive expectations:
Muni WiFi is bound to fail when it’s being judged by unrealistic expectations — as so many muni networks are. Vendors and politicians have whipped up a frenzy around the networks, while a willing media […]
